[471] Then Māra the Evil One, having assumed the form of a farmer, with a great plough set upon his shoulder, holding a long goad-stick, his hair dishevelled, clad in a hempen garment, his feet smeared with mud, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, he said this to the Blessed One: "Ascetic, have you perhaps seen the oxen?" "But what, Evil One, have you to do with oxen?" "Mine alone, ascetic, is the eye, mine are forms (rūpā), mine is the sense base of consciousness arisen from eye-contact (cakkhusamphassaviññāṇāyatana); where can you go, ascetic, to escape from me? Mine alone, ascetic, is the ear, mine are sounds … Mine alone, ascetic, is the nose, mine are odours … Mine alone, ascetic, is the tongue, mine are tastes … Mine alone, ascetic, is the body, mine are tangibles (phoṭṭhabbā) … Mine alone, ascetic, is the mind (mano), mine are mental phenomena (dhammā), mine is the sense base of consciousness arisen from mind-contact (manosamphassaviññāṇāyatana); where can you go, ascetic, to escape from me?"
