[484] Then the Venerable Samiddhi approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Samiddhi said this to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, I dwell not far from the Blessed One, heedful, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute. Then, venerable sir, while I was alone in seclusion, this reflection arose in my mind: 'It is truly a gain for me, truly well gained by me, that my Teacher is an Arahant (arahaṃ), a Perfectly Enlightened One (sammāsambuddha)! It is truly a gain for me, truly well gained by me, that I have gone forth in a Dhamma and Discipline (dhammavinaya) so well expounded! It is truly a gain for me, truly well gained by me, that my companions in the holy life (sabrahmacārino)¹ are virtuous, of good character!' Then, venerable sir, not far from me there was a great sound, frightful and terrifying, so much so that it seemed the very earth was splitting open."
