[490] Then Māra the Evil One (pāpimā), having known with his own mind the reflection in the mind of the Venerable Godhika, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, he addressed the Blessed One in verses:
"O great hero, of great wisdom, blazing with spiritual power (iddhi) and glory,
who has passed beyond all enmity and fear — I worship your feet, O One with Vision.
Your disciple, O great hero, O vanquisher of death,
longs for and intends death: restrain him, O bearer of radiance!
For how, O Blessed One, could a disciple of yours, delighting in the teaching (sāsana),
a trainee (sekha) whose mind's ideal is unattained, die, O one renowned among the people?"
Now on that occasion the Venerable Godhika had already used the knife.
