[535] Then Māra the Evil One, desiring to arouse fear, trepidation, and terror in the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā, and desiring to make her fall away from concentration (samādhi), approached the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā; and having approached, he addressed the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā in verse:
"Having come to a tree with its crown in full blossom, bhikkhunī,
you stand alone at the foot of the sāla tree;
and there is no second to you in beauty (vaṇṇadhātu);
such ones might come here—
foolish girl, are you not afraid of rogues?"
