[536] Then it occurred to the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā: "Now who is this reciting the verse — a human or a non-human?" Then it occurred to the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā: "This is Māra the Evil One, [who, desiring to arouse] fear in me … recites the verse." Then the bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā, having understood, "This is Māra the Evil One," addressed Māra the Evil One in verses:
"Though even a hundred thousand rogues
Just like you should come here,
I stir not a hair, I am not terrified;
Even alone, Māra, I do not fear you.
Here I shall vanish,
Or enter into your belly;
Even as I stand between your eyelashes,
You will not see me.
I have become master over the mind (citta),
The bases of spiritual power (iddhipāda) are well developed;
I am freed from all bonds;
I do not fear you, friend."
Then Māra the Evil One, realizing, "The bhikkhunī Uppalavaṇṇā knows me," sad and dejected, vanished right there.
