[572] [The Blessed One replied:]
"That you gave drink to many people
when they were thirsty, stricken by the summer heat—
that ancient practice of virtue and vows (sīlavatta) of yours indeed
I recollect, as one just awakened from sleep.
"That on the bank of the Eṇi you set free
the people who had been seized, as they were being led away captive—
that ancient practice of virtue and vows of yours indeed
I recollect, as one just awakened from sleep.
"That, when a ship was seized in the stream of the Gaṅgā
by a fierce nāga, out of compassion for human beings
you set it free by force, overpowering him—
that ancient practice of virtue and vows of yours indeed
I recollect, as one just awakened from sleep.
"And I was Kappa, your attendant pupil;
I deemed you endowed with understanding, devoted to your vows—
that ancient practice of virtue and vows of yours indeed
I recollect, as one just awakened from sleep."
[Baka Brahmā said:]
"Surely you know this life span of mine;
and others too you know—for thus you are the Buddha.
Hence this blazing majesty of yours
stands illuminating the brahmā world."
