[586] Setting at Sāvatthī.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One had gone for his day's abiding and was in seclusion.
Then the independent brahmā (paccekabrahmā) Subrahmā and the independent brahmā Suddhāvāsa approached the Blessed One; having approached, they stood leaning each against a doorpost.
Then the independent brahmā Subrahmā said this to the independent brahmā Suddhāvāsa: "It is not yet the time, dear sir, to pay respects to the Blessed One; the Blessed One has gone for his day's abiding and is in seclusion. That brahmā world (brahmaloka) yonder is prosperous and flourishing, yet the brahmā there dwells in negligence (pamāda). Come, dear sir, let us go to that brahmā world; having gone there, let us arouse in that brahmā a sense of urgency (saṃvega)."
"Yes, dear sir," the independent brahmā Suddhāvāsa assented to the independent brahmā Subrahmā.
Then, just as a strong man … even so the independent brahmā Subrahmā and the independent brahmā Suddhāvāsa vanished from before the Blessed One and appeared in that brahmā world.
That brahmā saw those brahmās coming while still far off. Having seen them, he said this to those brahmās: "Well now, dear sirs, where do you come from?"
"We have come just now, dear sir, from the presence of that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One (sammāsambuddha). But do you, dear sir, go to attend upon that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One?"
