[627] Then the brahmin lady (brāhmaṇī) Dhanañjānī, while bringing the meal for the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan, stumbled,¹ and three times she uttered this inspired utterance (udāna): "Homage to that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One! … Homage to that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One!"
When this was said, the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan said this to the brahmin lady Dhanañjānī: "Just so does this outcaste woman (vasalī), on any occasion whatsoever, speak the praise of that shaveling ascetic! Now, outcaste woman, I shall refute the doctrine of that teacher of yours."
"Brahmin, I do not see anyone in the world with its devas, its Māra, and its Brahmā, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and human beings, who could refute the doctrine of that Blessed One, the Arahant, the Perfectly Enlightened One. But go, brahmin; having gone, you will know."
