[632] When this was said, the Blessed One said to the brahmin Akkosaka Bhāradvāja: "What do you think, brahmin? Do friends and colleagues, relatives and kinsmen, come to you as guests?"
"Sometimes, Master Gotama, friends and colleagues, relatives and kinsmen, do come to me as guests."
"What do you think, brahmin? Do you then offer them food to be chewed, food to be eaten, or delicacies to be savored?"
"Sometimes, Master Gotama, I do offer them food to be chewed, food to be eaten, or delicacies to be savored."
"But if, brahmin, they do not accept it, to whom does it belong?"
"If, Master Gotama, they do not accept it, it remains ours alone."
"Just so, brahmin: in that you abuse us who do not abuse, provoke us who do not provoke, and berate us who do not berate — that we do not accept from you. It is yours alone, brahmin! It is yours alone, brahmin!
"He, brahmin, who abuses back one who abuses, provokes back one who provokes, and berates back one who berates — he, brahmin, is said to share the meal and to enter into an exchange. But we do not share the meal with you, nor do we enter into an exchange with you. It is yours alone, brahmin! It is yours alone, brahmin!"
"The assembly together with its king knows Master Gotama thus: 'The ascetic (samaṇa) Gotama is an arahant (arahaṃ).' And yet Master Gotama gets angry!"
