[664] Then the brahmin Sundarikabhāradvāja let that remainder of the oblation (habyasesa) sink in water free of living creatures.
Then that remainder of the oblation, when cast into the water, sizzled and hissed,¹ smoked and steamed. Just as a ploughshare, heated all day long, when cast into water sizzles and hisses, smokes and steams, even so that remainder of the oblation, when cast into the water, sizzled and hissed, smoked and steamed.
Then the brahmin Sundarikabhāradvāja, stirred with a sense of urgency, his hair standing on end, approached the Blessed One; and having approached, he stood to one side.
