[670] When this was said, the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan said this to the Blessed One: "Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama! Just as, Master Gotama, one might set upright what had been overturned, or uncover what had been concealed, or point out the path to one who was lost, or hold up an oil lamp in the darkness, thinking, 'Those with eyes will see forms' — even so has the Dhamma been made clear in many ways by Master Gotama. I go to Master Gotama for refuge (saraṇa), and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May I receive the going forth (pabbajjā) in the presence of Master Gotama; may I receive full ordination (upasampadā)."
And the brahmin of the Bhāradvāja clan received the going forth in the presence of the Blessed One; he received full ordination. And not long after his full ordination, the Venerable Bhāradvāja, dwelling alone, withdrawn, diligent, ardent, and resolute, before long realized for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, that unsurpassed culmination of the holy life (brahmacariya) for the sake of which sons of good family rightly go forth from the household life into homelessness, and having entered upon it, he dwelt therein. He directly knew: "Destroyed is birth; the holy life has been lived; what had to be done has been done; there is no more for this state of being." And the Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
