[640] When this was said, the brahmin Bilaṅgikabhāradvāja said this to the Blessed One: "Excellent, Master Gotama! Excellent, Master Gotama! … I go for refuge (saraṇa) to Master Gotama, and to the Dhamma, and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus. May I receive the going forth (pabbajjā) in the presence of Master Gotama …" … that unsurpassed consummation of the holy life (brahmacariya) he realized for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā) in this very life, and having entered upon it, he dwelt therein. He directly knew: "Destroyed is birth (jāti), the holy life has been lived, what had to be done has been done; there is no more for this state of being." And the Venerable Bhāradvāja became one of the arahants.
