[721] Then Saṅgārava the brahmin approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and cordial talk was concluded, he sat down at one side. As Saṅgārava the brahmin sat at one side, the Blessed One said this to him: "Is it true, brahmin, as it is said, that you are one who holds to purification by water (udakasuddhika), that you believe in purification by water, and that you dwell devoted to the practice of descending into the water (udakorohaṇa) at evening and at morning?"
"So it is, Master Gotama."
"But seeing what benefit, brahmin, do you, as one who holds to purification by water, believe in purification by water and dwell devoted to the practice of descending into the water at evening and at morning?"
"Here, Master Gotama, whatever evil deed (pāpakamma) has been done by me by day, that I wash away by bathing in the evening; whatever evil deed has been done by me by night, that I wash away by bathing in the morning. It is because I see this benefit, Master Gotama, that, as one who holds to purification by water, I believe in purification by water and dwell devoted to the practice of descending into the water at evening and at morning."
