[781] Then the deity (devatā) dwelling in that forest thicket, compassionate toward that bhikkhu and desiring his welfare, wishing to stir that bhikkhu to a sense of urgency (saṃvega), fashioned for herself the appearance of the housewife of that family (kulagharaṇī), approached that bhikkhu, and, having approached, addressed that bhikkhu in verse:
"On the banks of rivers, at the rest-house,
in assembly halls and on the streets,
people gather together and gossip:
'What is there between me and you?'"
