[790] Then the deity (devatā) who dwelt in that forest thicket, being sympathetic toward that bhikkhu, desiring his good, and wishing to stir him with a sense of urgency (saṃvega), approached that bhikkhu; and having approached, addressed that bhikkhu in verses:

"Through careless attention (ayoniso manasikāra) you are devoured by your thoughts (vitakka);
relinquishing the careless way, reflect in the careful way (yoniso).
Taking as your theme the Teacher, the Dhamma, the Saṅgha, and your own virtues (sīla),
you will attain gladness (pāmojja), and rapture (pīti) and happiness, beyond doubt;
then, abounding in gladness, you will make an end of suffering (dukkha)."
Then that bhikkhu, stirred by that deity, came to a sense of urgency.
