[796] Then the deity (devatā) who dwelt in that forest thicket, having compassion for that bhikkhu, desiring his welfare, and wishing to stir that bhikkhu to a sense of urgency (saṃvega), approached that bhikkhu; and having approached, addressed that bhikkhu in verse:
"You sniff this water-born flower, which has not been given:
this is one factor of theft — you are a thief of scent, dear sir."
