[868] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, once in the past the battle between the devas (devā) and the asuras (asurā) was massed in array. Then, bhikkhus, Vepacitti, lord of the asuras, addressed the asuras: 'Dear sirs, if, when the battle between the devas and the asuras is massed in array, the asuras should conquer and the devas should be defeated, then bind Sakka, lord of the devas, with the fivefold bonds, the neck being the fifth, and bring him into my presence in the city of the asuras.' And Sakka, lord of the devas, bhikkhus, likewise addressed the devas of Tāvatiṃsa: 'Dear sirs, if, when the battle between the devas and the asuras is massed in array, the devas should conquer and the asuras should be defeated, then bind Vepacitti, lord of the asuras, with the fivefold bonds, the neck being the fifth, and bring him into my presence at the Sudhammā assembly hall.' Now in that battle, bhikkhus, the devas conquered and the asuras were defeated. Then, bhikkhus, the devas of Tāvatiṃsa bound Vepacitti, lord of the asuras, with the fivefold bonds, the neck being the fifth, and brought him into the presence of Sakka, lord of the devas, at the Sudhammā assembly hall."
