[906] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, when Sakka, lord of the devas, was a human being in the past, seven vows (vattapada) were fully undertaken by him, by the undertaking of which Sakka attained the state of Sakka. What seven? 'As long as I live, may I support my mother and father. As long as I live, may I be respectful toward the elders of the family. As long as I live, may I be gentle in speech. As long as I live, may I not speak divisively. As long as I live, may I dwell at home with a mind rid of the stain of stinginess, freely generous, open-handed, delighting in relinquishment, devoted to charity, delighting in giving and sharing. As long as I live, may I be truthful in speech. As long as I live, may I be free from anger; and should anger arise in me, may I dispel it quickly.' Bhikkhus, when Sakka, lord of the devas, was a human being in the past, these seven vows were fully undertaken by him, by the undertaking of which Sakka attained the state of Sakka."
