[914] "Mahāli, in a former time, when Sakka, lord of the devas (devānaminda), was a human being, seven vows (vattapada) had been undertaken by him and fulfilled; and it was because he had undertaken them that Sakka attained the state of Sakka. What were the seven? 'As long as I live, may I support my mother and father. As long as I live, may I be respectful toward the elders of the family. As long as I live, may I speak gently. As long as I live, may I not speak divisively. As long as I live, may I dwell at home with a mind free from the stain of stinginess (macchera), freely generous, open-handed, delighting in relinquishment, devoted to charity, delighting in giving and sharing. As long as I live, may I speak the truth. As long as I live, may I be free from anger — and should anger arise in me, may I dispel it swiftly.' Mahāli, in a former time, when Sakka, lord of the devas, was a human being, these seven vows had been undertaken by him and fulfilled; and it was because he had undertaken them that Sakka attained the state of Sakka."
