[928] Setting at Sāvatthī. "Bhikkhus, once in the past Sakka, lord of the devas (devānaminda), addressed Mātali the charioteer (saṅgāhaka): 'Harness the chariot with its team of a thousand thoroughbreds, dear Mātali. Let us go to the park grounds to see the beautiful scenery.' — 'Yes, your lordship,' bhikkhus, Mātali the charioteer replied in assent to Sakka, lord of the devas; and having harnessed the chariot with its team of a thousand thoroughbreds, he announced to Sakka, lord of the devas: 'The chariot with its team of a thousand thoroughbreds has been harnessed for you, dear sir (mārisa). You may set out at whatever time you think fit.' Then, bhikkhus, as Sakka, lord of the devas, was descending from the Vejayanta Palace, he raised his joined palms in reverential salutation (añjali) and paid homage to the different quarters."
