[940] [Sakka replied:]
"It is this that I envy in those homeless ones, Mātali:
from whatever village they depart, they go from it without concern.
Nothing of theirs is laid up in a granary, nor in pots, nor in a basket;
seeking what has been prepared by others, on that they subsist, firm in their vows.
Wise ones who give good counsel, silent, of even conduct—
the devas are at strife with the asuras, and many mortals too, Mātali;
unhostile among the hostile, quenched among those who have taken up the rod,
free of grasping among those who grasp—it is they whom I revere, Mātali."
