[95] Standing to one side, one devatā uttered this inspired utterance (udāna) in the presence of the Blessed One: "Good indeed, dear sir, is giving (dāna)! Through stinginess and through heedlessness a gift is thus not given; by one wishing for merit, by one who understands, a gift should be given."
