[181] Then, bhikkhus, for the learned noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) there arises, independent of others (aparappaccayā), knowledge (ñāṇa) about this: "When this does not exist, this does not come to be; with the cessation of this, this ceases: when consciousness does not exist, name-and-form (nāmarūpa) does not come to be; when name-and-form does not exist, the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) do not come to be … clinging (upādāna) does not come to be … existence (bhava) does not come to be … birth does not come to be; when birth does not exist, aging and death do not come to be." He understands thus: "It is in this way that this world ceases."
