[185] Bhikkhus, it does not occur to the instructed noble disciple thus: "When what does not exist, what does not come to be? With the cessation of what, what ceases? When what does not exist, do volitional formations (saṅkhārā) not come to be? When what does not exist, does consciousness (viññāṇa) not come to be? When what does not exist, does name-and-form (nāmarūpa) not come to be? When what does not exist, do the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) not come to be? When what does not exist, does contact (phassa) not come to be? When what does not exist, does feeling (vedanā) not come to be? When what does not exist, does craving (taṇhā) not come to be? … clinging (upādāna) … existence (bhava) … birth (jāti) … When what does not exist, do aging and death (jarāmaraṇa) not come to be?"
