[186] But, bhikkhus, for the instructed noble disciple there arises in this matter knowledge (ñāṇa) independent of others: "When this does not exist, this does not come to be; with the cessation of this, this ceases. When ignorance (avijjā) does not exist, volitional formations do not come to be; when volitional formations do not exist, consciousness does not come to be; when consciousness does not exist, name-and-form (nāmarūpa) does not come to be; when name-and-form does not exist, the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) do not come to be … when birth does not exist, aging and death do not come to be." He understands thus: "In this way this world ceases."
