[233] Bhikkhus, therein the instructed noble disciple (sutavā ariyasāvako) attends carefully and thoroughly, with wise attention, to dependent origination (paṭiccasamuppāda) itself thus: 'When this exists, this comes to be; with the arising of this, this arises. When this does not exist, this does not come to be; with the cessation of this, this ceases — that is: with ignorance (avijjā) as condition, volitional formations [come to be]; with volitional formations as condition, consciousness … Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha). But with the remainderless fading away and cessation of ignorance comes the cessation of volitional formations; with the cessation of volitional formations, the cessation of consciousness … Thus is the cessation of this whole mass of suffering.'
