[256] The Blessed One said this: "Bhikkhus, here a bhikkhu, when exploring (sammasamāno), explores inwardly thus: 'This suffering (dukkha) of many kinds and of various sorts that arises in the world — aging and death: what now is the source of this suffering, what is its origin, from what is it born, from what is it produced? When what exists do aging and death come to be?' As he explores, he knows thus: 'This suffering of many kinds and of various sorts that arises in the world — aging and death: this suffering has acquisition (upadhi) as its source, acquisition as its origin, is born from acquisition, is produced from acquisition. When acquisition exists, aging and death come to be; when acquisition does not exist, aging and death do not come to be.' He understands aging and death, he understands the origin of aging and death, he understands the cessation of aging and death, and he understands the way of practice that is fitting for leading to the cessation of aging and death; and he is one practicing accordingly, conducting himself in conformity with the Dhamma. This bhikkhu, bhikkhus, is called one practicing for the utterly complete destruction of suffering, for the cessation of aging and death."
