[259] Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins in the past saw that in the world which is pleasing and agreeable as permanent, saw it as pleasurable, saw it as self, saw it as healthy, saw it as secure — they made craving (taṇhā) grow. Those who made craving grow made acquisitions (upadhi) grow; those who made acquisitions grow made suffering (dukkha) grow; those who made suffering grow were not freed from birth, aging, death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair; they were not freed from suffering, I say.
Bhikkhus, whatever ascetics or brahmins in the future will see that in the world which is pleasing and agreeable as permanent, will see it as pleasurable, will see it as self, will see it as healthy, will see it as secure — they will make craving grow. Those who will make craving grow will make acquisitions grow; those who will make acquisitions grow will make suffering grow; those who will make suffering grow will not be freed from birth, aging, death, from sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair; they will not be freed from suffering, I say.
