[264] Sitting to one side, the Venerable Mahākoṭṭhita said this to the Venerable Sāriputta: "How is it, friend Sāriputta — is aging-and-death (jarāmaraṇa) made by oneself, is aging-and-death made by another, is aging-and-death made both by oneself and by another, or has aging-and-death arisen fortuitously (adhicca samuppanna), being neither made by oneself nor made by another?"
"Friend Koṭṭhita, aging-and-death is not made by oneself, aging-and-death is not made by another, aging-and-death is not made both by oneself and by another, nor has aging-and-death arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another; rather, with birth (jāti) as condition, there is aging-and-death."
"How is it, friend Sāriputta — is birth made by oneself, is birth made by another, is birth made both by oneself and by another, or has birth arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another?"
"Friend Koṭṭhita, birth is not made by oneself, birth is not made by another, birth is not made both by oneself and by another, nor has birth arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another; rather, with existence (bhava) as condition, there is birth."
"How is it, friend Sāriputta — is existence made by oneself … is clinging (upādāna) made by oneself … is craving (taṇhā) made by oneself … is feeling (vedanā) made by oneself … is contact (phassa) made by oneself … are the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) made by oneself … is name-and-form (nāmarūpa) made by oneself, is name-and-form made by another, is name-and-form made both by oneself and by another, or has name-and-form arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another?"
"Friend Koṭṭhita, name-and-form is not made by oneself, name-and-form is not made by another, name-and-form is not made both by oneself and by another, nor has name-and-form arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another; rather, with consciousness (viññāṇa) as condition, there is name-and-form."
"How is it, friend Sāriputta — is consciousness made by oneself, is consciousness made by another, is consciousness made both by oneself and by another, or has consciousness arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another?"
"Friend Koṭṭhita, consciousness is not made by oneself, consciousness is not made by another, consciousness is not made both by oneself and by another, nor has consciousness arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another; rather, with name-and-form as condition, there is consciousness."
