[265] "Only just now do we understand the Venerable Sāriputta's statement thus: 'It is not, friend Koṭṭhita, that name-and-form (nāmarūpa) is made by oneself, nor that name-and-form is made by another, nor that name-and-form is both made by oneself and made by another, nor has name-and-form arisen fortuitously (adhicca-samuppanna), being neither made by oneself nor made by another; but rather, with consciousness (viññāṇa) as condition, there is name-and-form.' And only just now do we understand the Venerable Sāriputta's statement thus: 'It is not, friend Koṭṭhita, that consciousness is made by oneself, nor that consciousness is made by another, nor that consciousness is both made by oneself and made by another, nor has consciousness arisen fortuitously, being neither made by oneself nor made by another; but rather, with name-and-form as condition, there is consciousness.' But how, friend Sāriputta, is the meaning of this statement to be seen?"
