[277] There the Blessed One … "Bhikkhus, when the great ocean surges, it makes the great rivers surge; when the great rivers surge, they make the small rivers surge; when the small rivers surge, they make the great lakes surge; when the great lakes surge, they make the small lakes surge. In just the same way, bhikkhus, when ignorance (avijjā) surges, it makes volitional formations (saṅkhārā) surge; when volitional formations surge, they make consciousness (viññāṇa) surge; when consciousness surges, it makes name-and-form (nāmarūpa) surge; when name-and-form surges, it makes the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) surge; when the six sense bases surge, they make contact (phassa) surge; when contact surges, it makes feeling (vedanā) surge; when feeling surges, it makes craving (taṇhā) surge; when craving surges, it makes clinging (upādāna) surge; when clinging surges, it makes existence (bhava) surge; when existence surges, it makes birth (jāti) surge; when birth surges, it makes aging and death surge."
