[278] "Bhikkhus, when the great ocean recedes, it makes the great rivers recede; when the great rivers recede, they make the small rivers recede; when the small rivers recede, they make the great pools recede; when the great pools recede, they make the small pools recede. In the same way, bhikkhus, when ignorance (avijjā) recedes, it makes volitional formations (saṅkhārā) recede; when volitional formations recede, they make consciousness (viññāṇa) recede; when consciousness recedes, it makes name-and-form (nāmarūpa) recede; when name-and-form recedes, it makes the six sense bases (saḷāyatana) recede; when the six sense bases recede, they make contact (phassa) recede; when contact recedes, it makes feeling (vedanā) recede; when feeling recedes, it makes craving (taṇhā) recede; when craving recedes, it makes clinging (upādāna) recede; when clinging recedes, it makes existence (bhava) recede; when existence recedes, it makes birth (jāti) recede; when birth recedes, it makes aging-and-death recede."
