[341] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī. … There the Blessed One … (said): "Bhikkhus, in dependence on the diversity of elements (dhātu) there arises the diversity of contact (phassa); in dependence on the diversity of contact there arises the diversity of feeling (vedanā). It is not that in dependence on the diversity of feeling there arises the diversity of contact, nor that in dependence on the diversity of contact there arises the diversity of elements.
And what, bhikkhus, is the diversity of elements? The eye element (cakkhudhātu) … the mind element (manodhātu). This, bhikkhus, is called the diversity of elements."
