[351] "And what, bhikkhus, is the way in which, in dependence on the diversity (nānatta) of elements (dhātu), there arises the diversity of perceptions; in dependence on the diversity of perceptions there arises the diversity of intentions (saṅkappa); … of contact (phassa) … of feeling (vedanā) … of desire (chanda) … of fever (pariḷāha) … of quest (pariyesanā) … there arises the diversity of gains (lābha); while not in dependence on the diversity of gains does there arise the diversity of quests; … of fever … of desire … of feeling … the diversity of contacts; not in dependence on the diversity of intentions does there arise the diversity of perceptions; not in dependence on the diversity of perceptions does there arise the diversity of elements?
"Bhikkhus, in dependence on the form element (rūpadhātu) there arises perception of forms … in dependence on the mental-phenomena element (dhammadhātu) there arises perception of mental phenomena; in dependence on perception of mental phenomena there arises … the quest for mental phenomena; in dependence on the quest for mental phenomena there arises the gain of mental phenomena. But not in dependence on the gain of mental phenomena does there arise the quest for mental phenomena; not in dependence on the quest for mental phenomena does there arise the fever for mental phenomena; not in dependence on the fever for mental phenomena does there arise desire for mental phenomena; not in dependence on desire for mental phenomena does there arise feeling born of contact with mental phenomena; not in dependence on feeling born of contact with mental phenomena does there arise contact with mental phenomena; not in dependence on contact with mental phenomena does there arise intention concerning mental phenomena; not in dependence on intention concerning mental phenomena does there arise perception of mental phenomena; not in dependence on perception of mental phenomena does there arise the mental-phenomena element.
"It is in this way, bhikkhus, that in dependence on the diversity of elements there arises the diversity of perceptions; in dependence on the diversity of perceptions there arises the diversity of intentions; … of contact … of feeling … of desire … of fever … of quest … there arises the diversity of gains; while not in dependence on the diversity of gains does there arise the diversity of quests; not in dependence on the diversity of quests does there arise the diversity of fevers; not in dependence on the diversity of fevers does there arise the diversity of desires; not in dependence on the diversity of desires does there arise the diversity of feelings; not in dependence on the diversity of feelings does there arise the diversity of contacts; not in dependence on the diversity of contacts does there arise the diversity of intentions; not in dependence on the diversity of intentions does there arise the diversity of perceptions; not in dependence on the diversity of perceptions does there arise the diversity of elements."
