[352] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī. … There the Blessed One … [said:] "Bhikkhus, there are these seven elements (dhātu). What seven? The element of light (ābhādhātu), the element of beauty (subhadhātu), the element of the base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatanadhātu), the element of the base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatanadhātu), the element of the base of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatanadhātu), the element of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatanadhātu), and the element of the cessation of perception and feeling (saññāvedayitanirodhadhātu). These, bhikkhus, are the seven elements."
When this was said, a certain bhikkhu said to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, as to this element of light, the element of beauty, the element of the base of the infinity of space, the element of the base of the infinity of consciousness, the element of the base of nothingness, the element of the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception, and the element of the cessation of perception and feeling — in dependence on what, venerable sir, are these elements discerned?"
