[350] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī. … There the Blessed One … (said):
"Bhikkhus, in dependence on the diversity of elements (dhātu) there arises the diversity of perceptions (saññā); in dependence on the diversity of perceptions there arises the diversity of intentions (saṅkappa); … contact (phassa) … feeling (vedanā) … desire (chanda) … fever (pariḷāha) … in dependence on the diversity of quests (pariyesanā) there arises the diversity of gains (lābha).
"It is not in dependence on the diversity of gains that there arises the diversity of quests; it is not in dependence on the diversity of quests that there arises the diversity of fevers; it is not in dependence on the diversity of fevers that there arises the diversity of desires; … feeling … contact … intention … it is not in dependence on the diversity of perceptions that there arises the diversity of elements.
"And what, bhikkhus, is the diversity of elements? The form (rūpa) element … the mental-phenomena (dhamma) element. This, bhikkhus, is called the diversity of elements."
