Suttapiṭaka · Saṁyuttanikāya · Nidānavaggasaṁyutta · Vol. 16 · Section 338

[338] "And how, bhikkhus, is it that in dependence on the diversity of elements (dhātu) there arises the diversity of contacts, but not in dependence on the diversity of contacts does there arise the diversity of elements? In dependence on the eye element, bhikkhus, there arises eye-contact (cakkhusamphassa), but not in dependence on eye-contact does there arise the eye element … In dependence on the mind element there arises mind-contact, but not in dependence on mind-contact does there arise the mind element. It is in this way, bhikkhus, that in dependence on the diversity of elements there arises the diversity of contacts, but not in dependence on the diversity of contacts does there arise the diversity of elements." The third.
