[346] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī … There the Blessed One … "Bhikkhus, dependent on the diversity (nānatta) of elements (dhātu) there arises the diversity of perceptions (saññā); dependent on the diversity of perceptions there arises … the diversity of quests (pariyesanā). It is not dependent on the diversity of quests that the diversity of fevers (pariḷāha) arises; it is not dependent on the diversity of fevers that the diversity of desires (chanda) arises; it is not dependent on the diversity of desires that the diversity of intentions (saṅkappa) arises; it is not dependent on the diversity of intentions that the diversity of perceptions arises; it is not dependent on the diversity of perceptions that the diversity of elements arises.¹
"And what, bhikkhus, is the diversity of elements? The form element … the dhamma element. This, bhikkhus, is called the diversity of elements."
¹ In the Yu. edition the words "saññānānattaṃ no saññānānattaṃ paṭicca uppajjati" ("it is not dependent on the diversity of intentions that the diversity of perceptions arises") do not appear.
