[35] "Venerable sir, who now craves?"
"That is not a fitting question," the Blessed One said. "I do not say 'one craves.' If I were to say 'one craves,' then the question 'Venerable sir, who now craves?' would be fitting in that case. But I do not speak thus. If someone were to question me, who do not speak thus, in this way: 'Venerable sir, with what as condition is there craving (taṇhā)?'—that is a fitting question. And the fitting answer there is: 'With feeling (vedanā) as condition, craving; with craving as condition, clinging (upādāna).'"
