[404] "Bhikkhus, before my awakening, while I was still an unawakened bodhisatta, this thought occurred to me: 'What, now, is the gratification (assāda) in the earth element (pathavīdhātu), what is the danger (ādīnava), what is the escape (nissaraṇa)? What is the gratification in the water element (āpodhātu), what is the danger, what is the escape? What is the gratification in the fire element (tejodhātu), what is the danger, what is the escape? What is the gratification in the air element (vāyodhātu), what is the danger, what is the escape?'
"Then, bhikkhus, this occurred to me: 'The pleasure and joy that arise in dependence on the earth element—this is the gratification in the earth element. That the earth element is impermanent, suffering (dukkha), and subject to change—this is the danger in the earth element. The removal of desire and lust (chandarāga), the abandoning of desire and lust for the earth element—this is the escape from the earth element. The pleasure and joy that arise in dependence on the water element … in dependence on the fire element … The pleasure and joy that arise in dependence on the air element—this is the gratification in the air element. That the air element is impermanent, suffering, and subject to change—this is the danger in the air element. The removal of desire and lust, the abandoning of desire and lust for the air element—this is the escape from the air element.'"
