[405] Bhikkhus, so long as I did not directly know, as it really is (yathābhūta), the gratification (assāda) as gratification, the danger (ādīnava) as danger, and the escape (nissaraṇa) as escape in the case of these four elements (dhātu), for just so long, bhikkhus, I did not claim to have awakened to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment (anuttara sammāsambodhi) in this world with its devas, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its devas and humans. But when, bhikkhus, I directly knew, as it really is, the gratification as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape in the case of these four elements, then, bhikkhus, I claimed to have awakened to the unsurpassed perfect enlightenment in this world with its devas, with its Māras, with its Brahmās, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its devas and humans. And the knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision arose in me: "Unshakable is my liberation; this is my last birth; now there is no renewed existence."
