[407] Bhikkhus, so long as I did not directly know, as it really is, the gratification (assāda) of these four elements (dhātu) as gratification, the danger (ādīnava) as danger, and the escape (nissaraṇa) as escape, for just so long, bhikkhus, I did not claim to have awakened to the unsurpassed perfect awakening (anuttarā sammāsambodhi) in this world with its devas, Māra, and Brahmā, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans. But when, bhikkhus, I directly knew, as it really is, the gratification of these four elements as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape, then, bhikkhus, I claimed to have awakened to the unsurpassed perfect awakening in this world with its devas, Māra, and Brahmā, in this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans. And the knowledge (ñāṇa) and vision arose in me: "Unshakable is my liberation; this is my last birth (jāti); now there is no renewed existence."
