[409] Bhikkhus, so long as these beings have not directly known, as it really is (yathābhūta), the gratification (assāda) of these four elements (dhātu) as gratification, the danger (ādīnava) as danger, and the escape (nissaraṇa) as escape, for just so long, bhikkhus, these beings have not escaped from this world with its devas, with its Māra, with its Brahmā, from this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its devas and humans; they have not become detached from it, not been released from it, nor have they dwelt with a mind rid of barriers. But when, bhikkhus, these beings directly knew, as it really is, the gratification of these four elements as gratification, the danger as danger, and the escape as escape, then, bhikkhus, these beings escaped from this world with its devas, with its Māra, with its Brahmā, from this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, with its devas and humans; they became detached from it, released from it, and they dwell with a mind rid of barriers.
