[410] He was dwelling at Sāvatthī ... There the Blessed One ... "Bhikkhus, if this earth element (pathavīdhātu) were exclusively suffering (dukkha), beset by suffering, steeped in suffering, and not steeped in pleasure (sukha), beings would not become enamoured of the earth element. But because, bhikkhus, the earth element is beset by pleasure, steeped in pleasure, and not steeped in suffering, therefore beings become enamoured of the earth element.
"Bhikkhus, if this water element (āpodhātu) ... if this fire element (tejodhātu) ... if this air element (vāyodhātu) were exclusively suffering, beset by suffering, steeped in suffering, and not steeped in pleasure, beings would not become enamoured of the air element. But because, bhikkhus, the air element is beset by pleasure, steeped in pleasure, and not steeped in suffering, therefore beings become enamoured of the air element."
