[465] When he had sat down to one side, the Venerable Sāriputta said this to the Venerable Mahākassapa: "Friend Kassapa, it is said: 'One who is not ardent (anātāpī) and not afraid of wrongdoing (anottāpī) is incapable of awakening (sambodha), incapable of Nibbāna, incapable of attaining the unsurpassed security from bondage (yogakkhema); but one who is ardent (ātāpī) and afraid of wrongdoing is capable of awakening, capable of Nibbāna, capable of attaining the unsurpassed security from bondage.' In what way, friend, is one not ardent and not afraid of wrongdoing—incapable of awakening, incapable of Nibbāna, incapable of attaining the unsurpassed security from bondage? And in what way, friend, is one ardent and afraid of wrongdoing—capable of awakening, capable of Nibbāna, capable of attaining the unsurpassed security from bondage?"
