[466] "Here, friend, a bhikkhu does not arouse ardor (ātappa), thinking: 'Evil, unwholesome states (akusalā dhammā) that have not arisen in me, when arising, would lead to harm.' He does not arouse ardor, thinking: 'Evil, unwholesome states that have arisen in me, when not being abandoned, would lead to harm.' He does not arouse ardor, thinking: 'Wholesome states that have not arisen in me, when not arising, would lead to harm.' He does not arouse ardor, thinking: 'Wholesome states that have arisen in me, when ceasing, would lead to harm.' It is in this way, friend, that one is not ardent."
