[471] "What do you think, bhikkhus? What kind of bhikkhu is worthy to approach families?"
"Venerable sir, our teachings are rooted in the Blessed One, guided by the Blessed One, have the Blessed One as their resort. It would be good indeed, venerable sir, if the meaning of this statement might be made clear by the Blessed One himself. Having heard it from the Blessed One, the bhikkhus will remember it."
Then the Blessed One waved his hand in the air. "Bhikkhus, just as this hand does not get caught in the air, is not seized by it, is not bound to it, even so, bhikkhus, when any bhikkhu approaches families, his mind (citta) does not get caught among families, is not seized, is not bound, [thinking]: 'Let those who desire gains obtain gains; and let those who desire merit make merit!' Just as he is pleased and glad at his own gain, so is he pleased and glad at the gain of others. Such a bhikkhu, bhikkhus, is worthy to approach families. Bhikkhus, when Kassapa approaches families, his mind does not get caught among families, is not seized, is not bound, [thinking]: 'Let those who desire gains obtain gains; and let those who desire merit make merit!' Just as he is pleased and glad at his own gain, so is he pleased and glad at the gain of others."
