[472] "What do you think, bhikkhus — of what kind of bhikkhu is the teaching of the Dhamma (dhammadesanā) impure, and of what kind of bhikkhu is the teaching of the Dhamma pure?"
"Venerable sir, our teachings are rooted in the Blessed One, guided by the Blessed One, have the Blessed One as their resort. It would be good indeed, venerable sir, if the meaning of this statement would become clear to the Blessed One himself; having heard it from the Blessed One, the bhikkhus will remember it."
"Then listen, bhikkhus, and attend closely; I shall speak."
"Yes, venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said this:
"Bhikkhus, whatever bhikkhu teaches the Dhamma to others with a mind (citta) like this: 'Oh, may they listen to the Dhamma from me! And having listened, may they gain confidence in the Dhamma! And being confident, may they show me the manner of their confidence!' — of such a bhikkhu, bhikkhus, the teaching of the Dhamma is impure.
"But whatever bhikkhu teaches the Dhamma to others with a mind like this: 'The Dhamma is well expounded by the Blessed One, directly visible, not delayed by time, inviting one to come and see, applicable, to be personally experienced by the wise. Oh, may they listen to the Dhamma from me! And having listened, may they understand the Dhamma! And having understood, may they practise accordingly!' — thus he teaches the Dhamma to others in dependence on the intrinsic excellence of the Dhamma; he teaches the Dhamma to others in dependence on compassion; he teaches the Dhamma to others in dependence on tender concern; he teaches the Dhamma to others out of sympathy. Of such a bhikkhu, bhikkhus, the teaching of the Dhamma is pure."
