[477] Bhikkhus, Kassapa approaches families with a mind such as this: "How could that be obtained here among the families of others? — 'Let them give to me only; let them not fail to give. Let them give to me much indeed; let them not give little. …'" [When] they do not give, Kassapa is not hurt thereby; he does not experience suffering (dukkha) and grief on that account. They give little, not much: Kassapa is not hurt thereby; he does not experience suffering and grief on that account. They give what is coarse, not what is excellent: Kassapa is not hurt thereby; he does not experience suffering and grief on that account. They give slowly, not quickly: Kassapa is not hurt thereby; he does not experience suffering and grief on that account. They give without respect, not with respect: Kassapa is not hurt thereby; he does not experience suffering and grief on that account.
Bhikkhus, I shall exhort you with [the example of] Kassapa, or with one who is like Kassapa; and being exhorted, you should practise so as to become thus.
