[481] "Venerable sir, it is because I see two benefits (atthavasa) that for a long time I have been a forest dweller (āraññika) and a speaker in praise of forest dwelling; … an almsfood eater (piṇḍapātika) and … ; a rag-robe wearer (paṃsukūlika) and … ; a triple-robe wearer (tecīvarika) and … ; one of few wishes (appiccha) and … ; contented (santuṭṭha) and … ; secluded (pavivitta) and … ; aloof from company (asaṃsaṭṭha) and … ; one of aroused energy and a speaker in praise of the arousing of energy — seeing for myself a pleasant abiding in this very life, and having compassion for later generations, thinking: 'Perhaps later generations will follow the example seen (diṭṭhānugati), thinking: "Those who, it is said, were the disciples awakened after the Buddha (buddhānubuddhasāvakā) were for a long time forest dwellers and speakers in praise of forest dwelling; … they were almsfood eaters and … ; they were rag-robe wearers and … ; they were triple-robe wearers and … ; they were of few wishes and … ; they were contented and … ; they were secluded and … ; they were aloof from company and … ; they were of aroused energy and speakers in praise of the arousing of energy." They will practice accordingly, and that will be for their welfare and happiness for a long time.'
